A little after 11:00 p.m., my phone rang, and I raced to pick it up.

“Hello?”

“I miss you,” Ash breathed out, and I wished I could hold her.

“I know. I miss you, too. You think you could feel it if I wrap my arms around myself?”

“We could switch to video, and I could see it and pretend it’s me.” Her tone was a little lighter, and I wished we could do so much more, but I had to settle for what was possible in the moment.

“Okay.” After switching screens, her gorgeous face popped up, and her eyes were a little puffy. I didn’t know if it was from being tired or crying, or maybe it was both.

“Hey, beautiful. I pictured you the entire plane ride, but it can’t compare.”

“So, your flight was okay?”

“It would have been better if you were next to me, but yeah. I slept for some of it, so it wasn’t too bad.” She reclined on her bed with one arm holding the phone and the other behind her head.

I remembered my time with her and how I would curl into that space while she held me tight.

“I’m glad you are safe. You look tired.” After I said it, I realized that sounded like an insult. “Not in a bad way. I just meant you’re probably exhausted from the trip and…” I didn’t want to bring up the emotions, so I let that sit there and hoped she’d step in.

“It has been a long day. I have already showered and am ready for bed. So as soon as we say goodnight, I’ll be with you in dreamland.”

If only it were that easy. If I could summon her in my sleep each night, I would never wake up until we could be together again. But I knew I had no control over that.

“Why don’t I let you go? We can talk tomorrow. Do you have to work?”

She sighed. “Unfortunately, yes. But I don’t go until noon, so I’ll be able to sleep in.”

“I wish I was there.” I hugged myself, and she smiled with her eyes drifting between open and closed.

“You are here.” She tapped her heart, and this time, her eyes stayed closed a little longer.

“Set the phone next to you, and I’ll stay with you all night. And when you wake up, I’ll be next to you.”

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

She did as I said, and it was a matter of seconds before a soft, even breathing came from her end. All I could see was the ceiling of her place, but I knew she was there. I pressed the mute button and got ready for bed myself. After brushing my teeth and changing into PJs, I crawled under the covers and unmuted the phone, setting it next to my head.

Listening to the rhythm of her breathing, I fell asleep and hoped to meet her in our minds.
